At Last Geo News & Geo Super back on cable

Geo News & Geo Super have resumed their transmission on cable.

President Pervez Musharraf on Saturday ordered Pakistan’s largest and most popular news channel Geo News and its sports channel Geo Super back on the air.

Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (Pemra) asked cable operators to connect Geo and now viewers can watch the popular channel on cable.

CITY GOVT. ISSUES LOI TO ABASEEN INTERNATIONAL FOR GENERATING POWER FROM MUNICIPAL WASTE.

Karachi. Jan 13: City District Government Karachi has issued letter of intent (LOI) to a Malaysian firm Abaseen International for setting up of a plant to generate power from municipal waste under 25 years BOT (build-operate-transfer) agreement. The document was signed by EDO Municipal Services City Government Karachi Masood Alam and the company’s Director Omer Malik in a local hotel on Sunday in the presence of Nazim Karachi Syed Mustafa Kamal, DCO Karachi Javed Hanif, EDOs and other officers of CDGK.

Under the agreement Abaseen International would set up a power plant using city’s waste in Karachi involving an initial investment of $130 million. City Government will provide 25 acre land for the project.

City Government Karachi has already hired a Chinese firm Shanghai Shengong Environmental Protection Ltd for solid waste management. The Chinese firm would provide 1000 tones of waste to Abaseen International to generate 50 megawatt power out of this. Besides setting up of more such projects, this project would also be extended in future and measures would be taken to generate 560 megawatt power from 10,000 tones of waste generated daily in Karachi. The City Government would get a 15percent share from the income obtained from sale of electricity.

Nazim Karachi Syed Mustafa Kamal while addressing a ceremony held on this occasion said that Karachi has been facing the shortage of power, however we have adopted a new way to meet our requirement by converting municipal waste into useful electricity.

He said that within 4 months this project would start working and power generation would begin in 18 months.
Nazim Karachi said that under the private public partnership this project would also be monetarily beneficial to city government. Haq Parast leadership has worked for one and half year to get there and now it has been decided to use municipal waste for generation of power.

He hoped that this would also send a positive message to all over the world that Karachi has now the latest machinery and technology for producing electricity from waste and other international companies would also take notice of this fact as Karachi produces large amount of municipal waste.

City Nazim said that today was the era of technology and the same method adopted by the mega cities of the world for disposal of waste and generation of power from waste was being used in Karachi.

The Nazim said that it is very unfortunate that despite spending maximum amount on the solid waste management, the conditions here are still not satisfactory, however, we have taken revolutionary measures in this regard and we hope to get success in our endeavors.

Suicide bomber among five detained for planning terror attacks in Karachi

KARACHI: Police have detained five suspects for planning terror attacks on Muharram 9 and 10 mourning processions in Karachi.

Inspector General Police Azhar Farooqui told a press conference Saturday that the police have detained five terror suspects including an alleged suicide bomber Aziz Ahmed alias Muhammad Khan, Muhammad Ejaz alias Abdul Rahman, Jamil Ahmed alias Wazir Akbar, Muhammad Hamid alias Qasim and Muhammad Wasim alias Imran.

IGP said that police recovered 6Kg explosive used in the suicide jacket, 3 hand grenades, 6 detonators, 15 meter detonating wire, 500 grams cyanide, one generator used to generate remote control, 2 TT pistols with 20 rounds, 2 Kg ball bearings and one Kg spikes.

The Police in cooperation with a federal sensitive agency foiled a plan for terrorism on the occasion of Ashura in the city, he said.

IGP Azhar Farooqi said that during interrogation, the terrorists admitted having carried out planning to attack Muharram processions with hand grenades and suicide bombing, suicidal attacks at army installations and mixing cyanide in water at sabeels.

The arrested terrorists were members of various terrorist groups. One of the terrorists was resident of Karachi, while others were from Bhambar Azad Kashmir, Multan and Lodhran.

He pointed out that four of the arrested terrorists had undergone training at a terrorist camp in Mir Ali’s tribal area. The gang leader Mohammed Aijaz alias Abdul Rehman had been imparting training in terrorism at various training camps after Afghan war and was a teacher at a warfare training camp in South Waziristan.

Security high alert in Karachi after Peshawar blast

KARACHI: Security high alert declared in Karachi Thursday after bomb blast outside an Imambargah in Peshawar.

Moreover, United States embassy has advised US nationals to observe caution and avoid to go outside of homes unnecessarily.
