Whether elections would be held?
January 19th, 2008
Our history tells us that Yahya Khan had no intention of holding fair elections, as he kept taking legal/illegal measures till the last moment for keeping his grip on power strong, but meanwhile, such a wave of people’s awakening swept through both the East and West Pakistan that the results came out quite contrary to the expectations. Had the constitution and the laws were adhered to at that time and the people’s mandate was not derided, then Pakistan would never have broken.
The question presently is again the same whether elections would be held on February 18 or like the past, some blunder would again be repeated and the elections would be put off or elections would be held, but the people’s mandate would once more be scorned off and such ways for making possible the decisions contrary to the wishes of the people would be adopted.
