Suicide bomber among five detained for planning terror attacks in Karachi

KARACHI: Police have detained five suspects for planning terror attacks on Muharram 9 and 10 mourning processions in Karachi.

Inspector General Police Azhar Farooqui told a press conference Saturday that the police have detained five terror suspects including an alleged suicide bomber Aziz Ahmed alias Muhammad Khan, Muhammad Ejaz alias Abdul Rahman, Jamil Ahmed alias Wazir Akbar, Muhammad Hamid alias Qasim and Muhammad Wasim alias Imran.

IGP said that police recovered 6Kg explosive used in the suicide jacket, 3 hand grenades, 6 detonators, 15 meter detonating wire, 500 grams cyanide, one generator used to generate remote control, 2 TT pistols with 20 rounds, 2 Kg ball bearings and one Kg spikes.

The Police in cooperation with a federal sensitive agency foiled a plan for terrorism on the occasion of Ashura in the city, he said.

IGP Azhar Farooqi said that during interrogation, the terrorists admitted having carried out planning to attack Muharram processions with hand grenades and suicide bombing, suicidal attacks at army installations and mixing cyanide in water at sabeels.

The arrested terrorists were members of various terrorist groups. One of the terrorists was resident of Karachi, while others were from Bhambar Azad Kashmir, Multan and Lodhran.

He pointed out that four of the arrested terrorists had undergone training at a terrorist camp in Mir Ali’s tribal area. The gang leader Mohammed Aijaz alias Abdul Rehman had been imparting training in terrorism at various training camps after Afghan war and was a teacher at a warfare training camp in South Waziristan.
